My 25 Questions

Past few days I have come across a few blogs posting these 25 questions and answering them.  I thought I would do the same! I got these from the $900 facebook pony blog. Some of them were very American, so I changed the words to a more English version to help stop any confusion!

  1. Mares or Geldings? Why?
I have always preferred mares. I’m not 100% sure why, I think it might be because they tend to be that little bit smarter. But geldings are much easier and I wouldn’t swap Scottie for the world. So I guess it just comes down to the horse.
  2. Untouched, Green or Established?
It would depend on what I wanted it for. But since I love my ex racehorses, Green. They have had a career already and know the basics. However, a lot of what you will be doing with them is completely new. I love the sense of achievement when the horse improves and you know its down to all the work you have put in.

  3. Would you own a “hotter” breed?
Yes. I love my thoroughbreds! Maybe not an arab though, not a huge fan.
  4. What was your dream horse growing up?
I had totally forgotten my dream horse until an old friend came to see Scottie and she remembered. I had always wanted a big chestnut thoroughbred.
  5. What kind of bit(s) do you use? Why?
I like to use a snaffle as much as possible. I can’t tell you much about their action, but I like a french link snaffle. Both of Scottie’s bits are french link, but different thickness and rings.
  6. Helmet or no Helmet?
Always a helmet! I seem to fall off quite a lot so really not worth the risk!
  7. Favourite coat colour?
A lovely bright chestnut. The brighter the ginger the better!
  8. Least favourite colour?
I’m not a huge fan of coloureds and could never own a grey… too much hard work!
  9. Dressage or Jumping?
It always used to be jumping, but now it’s pretty even. I think the thrill of jumping still just beats dressage for me.
  10. How long have you been riding?
Well I started at 6/7 years old. So it must be around 15 years now!
Own Photo. My early days at riding school.
  11. Spurs/Whip/Neither?
I’m not a huge fan of spurs, but then I have never really needed to use them. Will carry a whip for jumping and hacking alone and sometimes for schooling.
  12. Your first fall?
I wouldn’t be able to tell you. It would have been off a pony at a riding school. I fell off a lot then, especially jumping where I would jump the jump but the pony wouldn’t…. I haven’t really learnt from this as it still happens with Scottie!
  13. When was the last time you rode and what did you do?
    Yesterday I jump schooled Scottie.
  14. What is the most expensive tack you own?
That would be my new BJS saddle.  But I love it so its fine!
  15. How old were you when you first started riding?
6 or 7. I’m not sure which now.
  16. Leather or Nylon headcollar?
I like both. Leather for shows and travelling. Nylon for around the yard, leaving out in the rain by the field. Plus can get bright colours in nylon…
  17. Leather or Synthetic saddle?
I always liked leather. But after seeing some of the half leather half synthetic, I could happily have one of them. In fact my new one is fully adjustable and not all leather.
  18. What ‘grip’ reins do you like?
    Plain and simple rubber grip.
  19. English or Western?
English. Although I love the idea of hacking out in western. If the saddles weren’t so expensive I think Scottie would be in one now!
  20. How many horses do you own/loan?
    Just the one. For now.
  21. How do you keep your horse? At home/DIY/Part livery/full livery?
DIY. Would love to have the land to keep at home though!
  22. Have you ever had a horse put down?
No. But horses I have shared and known for a very long time have been.
  23. How many saddle pads do you have?
Including half pads…. 7. But I’m itching for more!
  24. Trailer or a lorry?
I’m not hugely fussed either way. I can’t afford a small lorry and anything else I would need to get a license for… Anything where the horse has enough space and in good condition.
  25. Why do you ride?
I love it. (and it’s the only form of exercise I do!)
