I finally managed to find a saddler who is able to alter my saddler if it needed it and they came out to see us yesterday. It wasn’t quite the news I was hoping for, but it wasn’t too bad.
The saddle needed a lot of reflocking but the saddler said the tree shape and saddle type is perfect for him. However, she doesn’t like how tight it gets around the withers once I’m on and that if she was to fit him a new saddle, it’s not what she would choose. But she also said that it doesn’t seem to be causing him any problems and unless we start doing a lot more it should be fine, just keep an eye on him.
So basically our saddle fits him okay and if he puts on a bit more top line it will fit a lot better. It is possible that the reason it doesn’t fit as well as when we first got it is that Scottie has lost a bit of topline due to being in fairly irregular work recently. The saddler doesn’t think it will need looking at again until after winter unless he changes significantly.
So although we might need to look into getting a new saddle some time next year, the saddler is happy that ours will be good for now, and if we manage to get some more top line it could do us a lot longer.
