I love the fact that you can get a Ponyo fly mask to match your patterned fly rugs. But they are more than just a fun gimick, they are also really good quality fly masks! I couldn’t imagine buying a different brand now!

Scottie the Fly Mask Houdini

Scottie is a fly mask Houdini. Over the years he has been a nightmare for removing his fly mask in the field. A particularly annoying time was when I had turned him out with his fly mask on at 7am. Just to get sent a photo at 7.15am asking if this was Scottie’s fly mask in the floor. Nightmare!

But over the past 2 summers, Scottie has been wearing his Ponyo fly mask a lot more. This summer in particular he has been wearing one every day. Partly due to his weird manky ear, and partly because the flies seem to be awful this year! One of the reasons I love my Ponyo fly mask is that he hardly ever gets them off. I can’t actually think of a time he has managed to get them off, but I imagine he probably has at some point.

My Ponyo Fly Masks

I’ve had 2 Ponyo Fly Masks; last years Happy Pineapple to match Scottie’s fly rug and this year their Flamingo to match his waterproof flamingo fly rug. They both have slightly different designs, with this years mask being a slight improvement on last years in terms of fit and features. I found both masks fit Scottie nicely. He is obviously comfortable in them and doesn’t feel the need to remove them.

Minor issue with last years design

I did have a small issue with last years mask where it came apart slightly at one of the seams. But within days Ponyo sent out a replacement for this mask and it didn’t happen again. In hindsight, it might have been where I connected the mask to his fly rug as he had worn it for days without a problem then when the fly rug went on, all of a sudden there was a little gap.

This years design a huge improvement

Scottie’s new mask this year has been fantastic. At first I wasn’t sure it would fit as well and I was a bit worried it wouldn’t stay on with just the one velcro strap. But I didn’t need to be worried. It fits him perfectly, even better than last years mask. Despite daily use, other than being a bit grubby, it is showing no signs of wear. Even with Scottie sticking his head in hedges and thorns to snack.

I love my Ponyo masks and the hardest thing will be resisting the urge to buy one in a new pattern next year… I mean… we don’t have a lycra one yet…
